Case study

igrice.hr: faster pages, games on click and a tidy catalogue.

igrice.hr is a Croatian site with free browser games for children and adults, with no downloads or sign-up. From 23 October 2026 we worked through it systematically for the client. The catalogue grew from 53 to 113 games with Croatian descriptions, pages load up to six times faster on a slow mobile connection, and a game from the external service now loads only when the visitor clicks “Play”.

Starting point

Games from outside, pages for children.

The games are made and served by external publishers, and igrice.hr embeds them with a Croatian description and instructions. On pages that children open, the game frame loaded analytics and advertising code as soon as the page opened, without any click.

Pages were slow on mobile, game descriptions were short and the thumbnails were heavy.

What we did

Content, speed, privacy and checks.

01

Games and content

The catalogue grew from 53 to 113 games, with a database backup before every import, and every category has at least 10 games. 65 games got a longer, unique text (100 to 150 words instead of 32 to 69), using facts only from the publisher’s instructions. 10 categories got longer introductions and 29 pages longer search descriptions. Titles of 5 categories and 14 games now match real Croatian searches, such as “pasijans” (solitaire, 10,000 a month) and “bubble shooter” (8,200).

02

Speed and mobile

Measured like Lighthouse on mobile (slow 4G, throttled CPU, no cache): the largest content on a game page went from 5.95 s to 0.90 s after removing unnecessary gallery code, and on the homepage from 5.0 s to 1.36 s. Our own WebP thumbnails replaced external JPGs: 53 thumbnails went from 5,770 KB to 1,085 KB. Horizontal scrolling on mobile was removed, text contrast fixed and touch targets for game names enlarged from 19 to 25 px.

03

Privacy

A game loads only after a click on “Play”, with a note that it comes from an external service that may show ads. Before the click, the page loads neither the game nor the publisher’s advertising partners. This was verified with a real click in the browser, on desktop and at mobile width. Early connections to external fonts and game servers were removed, and visit analytics run without cookies.

04

Technical SEO and accessibility

Every sitemap address returns 200, with a canonical tag, one H1 and structured data: VideoGame on games, CollectionPage on categories and BreadcrumbList. All 116 internal links work and no page lacks incoming links. A “Skip to content” link helps keyboard and screen reader users.

05

Security and maintenance

HSTS and basic security headers, and inactive themes and an unnecessary administrator account removed after a backup. A weekly automatic check covers every game (page, game source, thumbnail), and a weekly security check covers core and plugin integrity, administrators, error logs and headers. Every theme change goes through a backup, a code check, control addresses and a rollback.

Results

What can be measured now.

  • Speed on a slow mobile connection: game page 5.95 s → 0.90 s, homepage 5.0 s → 1.36 s. Without network throttling LCP is 0.15 to 0.44 s, and layout shift (CLS) is 0.
  • Lighter pages: homepage thumbnails 5.8 MB → 1.1 MB.
  • Catalogue: 113 games, 65 of them with a longer unique text. A content check found no repeated sentences of 10 or more words.
  • Reliability: in the weekly check on 30 October, 101 of the 101 games published at the time worked correctly.

Traffic measurement started at the end of October 2026. We will add the numbers once there are a few months of data.

In progress

What continues.

  • Weekly game and security checks.
  • Our own thumbnails for the newer games as well.
  • New game and category texts based on searches.
